Technical Organisations

There are a number of local and national organisations, including the New Zealand Government, which promote and support entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialisation.

Local Organisations

BioSouth

BioSouth is a network of Dunedin biotechnology companies and related entities whose aim is to generate more wealth for the region from biotechnology.

DCC Economic Development Unit 
The Dunedin City Council has a dedicated Economic Development Unit. This unit assists business with creating the jobs and wealth that are a vital part of what makes Dunedin a great place to live. They provide Dunedin businesses, from start-up companies through to established businesses and industries, with development assistance and have a range of resources, contacts and experience available to facilitate this.

Audacious

Audacious promotes entrepreneurship and provides one-on-one advice, contacts and mentoring to help University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic students to start and run businesses.

Otago Innovation Limited

Otago Innovation Limited is a wholly–owned subsidiary of the University of Otago. It is charged with exclusive responsibility for the commercialisation of Intellectual Property arising from research within the University.

University of Otago Research and Enterprise Office

The Research and Enterprise Office assists researchers with funding applications and external contracts and encourages research links between business and University researchers, it also has the objective of identifying and protecting commercially viable intellectual property owned by the University.

UpStart Business Incubator

Entrepreneurs helping entrepreneurs. Upstart lends a hand to companies, from one-person start-ups to successful small business, who want help to grow fast and generate revenues in the millions.

Grow Wellington
Grow Wellington is the regional economic development agency, funded through the Greater Wellington Regional Council. They are investing in growing our economy, especially our exports, and can connect high growth businesses with the people, tools and knowledge they need to fulfil their potential.

Canterbury Development Corporation
Canterbury Development Corporation is Christchurch's economic development agency tasked with accelerating growth and transforming the Christchurch & Canterbury economy. The Canterbury Development Corporation focuses on assisting key businesses and sectors to make a difference to the economic wealth of the people of the region. 

National Organisations

Crown Research Institutes

There are nine Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) in New Zealand. They were established in 1992 as Government-owned businesses with a scientific purpose. Each of the institutes is focused around a productive sector of the New Zealand economy or a grouping of natural resources.

The nine CRIs are:

Foundation for Research, Science and Technology

The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FoRST) was established by the Government in 1990 to invest in research, science and technology for the benefit of New Zealand. It now invests in and manages government funds in the science sector through a variety of schemes including grant funding for research organisations and businesses, PhD scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships.

Health Research Council

The Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) is the Crown agency responsible for the management of the Government's investment in public good health research.

New Zealand Health IT Cluster

The New Zealand Health IT Cluster is an industry grouping of New Zealand-based organisations interested in health IT and dedicated to bringing enhanced health to the globe through better technology. This collaborative group is comprised of software and solution developers, consultants, health policy makers, health funders, infrastructure companies, healthcare providers, and academic institutions.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is the government’s national economic development agency.  It aims to stimulate economic growth by helping to develop international trade and investment opportunities, strengthening regional economies, and delivering economic development assistance to industries and individual businesses, from start-up companies through to experienced exporters.

NZBio

NZBio is an incorporated society representing the New Zealand biotechnology sector. It aims to create an environment for individuals and organisations to be successful and thus build a prosperous biotechnology sector in New Zealand.

Tertiary Education Commission

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is responsible for leading the government's relationship with the tertiary education sector, and for policy development and implementation. The TEC allocates funding to all tertiary providers including universities; builds the capability and capacity of tertiary education and training to contribute to national economic and social goals; and advises government on policies, priorities and sector performance.

Government Ministries

The government ministries have a number of roles including advising the government on policies, managing resources and conducting research. They can provide support for innovation through both research funding and awards.

What's Happening

Partnering for Innovation 2010 Seminar Programme

The Partnering for Innovation Seminar Programme is being run again in Dunedin this year. The speakers people who are involved in various stages of developing a technology based business, from initial development of the idea through to marketing and selling. There are 10 presentations, which will be held fortnightly, from the end of April.
